Formed in His Image: A Journey Toward True North
Formed in His Image: A Journey Toward True North
Day 1: You Bear His Image
Reading: Genesis 1:26-27; Psalm 139:13-16
Devotional: Before the first word of creation was spoken, you were already in the conversation. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit agreed together: let us make man in our image. That word "image" carried the weight of a king placing his statue at the borders of his territory, declaring ownership, authority, and identity. You were not an afterthought. You were the singular passion behind creation itself. No matter how marred, defaced, or worn you feel today, your value was assigned before time began and has never been revoked. Rest in this: God is not confused about who you are. Only we are.
Personal Reflection: In what areas of your life have you allowed circumstances, people, or failures to define your value rather than your Creator?
Practical Application: Write down one lie you have believed about your worth and replace it with a truth rooted in the reality that you are made in the image of God.
Day 2: True North vs. Magnetic North
Reading: Mark 12:13-27; Deuteronomy 6:4-6
Devotional: A compass pointing to magnetic north rather than true north can lead a hiker fifteen miles off course after only thirteen degrees of deviation. The Pharisees, Herodians, and Sadducees were all navigating from magnetic north. Their questions were shaped by politics, religion, and earthly reasoning rather than the unchanging truth of who God is and who he made humanity to be. Jesus answered every question from true north, the reality established in the pre-incarnate conversation of Genesis 1:26. When the pressures of finances, health, or relationships begin pulling at you, the invitation is always the same: adjust the bezel and return to zero.
Personal Reflection: What external pressures most frequently pull your compass away from true north? How do you recognize when you have drifted?
Practical Application: Identify one circumstance currently causing you to question God's goodness. Deliberately bring that circumstance before him in prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to reorient your perspective toward his unchanging character.
Day 3: The Gospel of Death to Life
Reading: Romans 6:3-11; Galatians 2:20; 2 Corinthians 3:18
Devotional: The gospel is not a renovation project. It is not the remodeling of your previous life into something slightly more presentable. It is death followed by resurrection. Paul understood this not as a theological concept but as the very rhythm of spiritual formation. We are being transformed from glory to glory, but that transformation requires the surrender of what we were so that what God intends can emerge. The unveiled face that Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 3:18 is not the face of someone who has cleaned themselves up. It is the face of someone who has stopped hiding and allowed the Spirit to do what only the Spirit can do.
Personal Reflection: What parts of your old self are you still trying to preserve rather than surrender? What would it look like to genuinely choose death to self in those areas?
Practical Application: Spend ten minutes in silence today. No agenda, no petition list. Simply say to the Lord: "I give you permission to remove everything that obstructs your activity in my life."
Day 4: Christ Formed in You
Reading: Galatians 4:19; Ephesians 4:11-16; Philippians 1:6
Devotional: Paul described his ministry not primarily in terms of churches planted or miracles performed, but in terms of a singular labor: until Christ is formed in you. The Greek word he used carries the image of a child developing in the womb, an organic, internal, and irreversible process of growth. The Holy Spirit does not kick you out of the way and do the work for you. Like a skilled surgeon guiding the hands of a resident, he nudges, informs, and assists. You must make the decisions. You must say yes. But the work of formation belongs to him, and he is faithful to complete what he has begun.
Personal Reflection: Where in your life do you most resist the Holy Spirit's guidance? What would it mean to genuinely cooperate with his work of formation rather than manage it?
Practical Application: Choose one relationship or responsibility in your life and ask the Holy Spirit specifically how he wants to form Christ in you through that context this week.
Day 5: Not Far from the Kingdom
Reading: Mark 12:28-34; 1 John 4:16-19; Romans 8:29
Devotional: When Jesus told the scribe "you are not far from the kingdom of God," it was the highest possible affirmation. The scribe had heard something in Jesus's answers that resonated at a level deeper than intellectual agreement. Something in him recognized the image in which he was made. The kingdom of God is not primarily signs, wonders, or miracles. Those things serve the kingdom, but they are not the kingdom itself. The kingdom is Christ being formed in his people. That formation begins with the simplest and most difficult act available to any human being: allowing God to love you the way he wants to love you, without obstruction, without excuse, and without condition.
Personal Reflection: What obstacles, whether shame, self-sufficiency, or unbelief, prevent you from receiving God's love fully? What would it mean to remove those obstacles today?
Practical Application: Close this reading plan by writing a brief prayer of surrender. Not a request list, but a declaration that you are saying yes to being formed into the image and likeness of Christ, whatever that process requires.
This reading plan is designed to be revisited. Formation is not a five-day event. It is the work of a lifetime, carried out by the Spirit of God in those who continually say yes.
